Travels with Charlie

Charlie Dog is one lucky pup, besides having one of if not the best job any dog could want, working at The Honest Kitchen, his two legged people love road trips- especially the camping type.  Each road trip, some new innovative trick is discovered to make the journey that much more fun, and easy, so we thought we’d share our experiences.  We would love to hear from you if you too have some fun traveling stories with your fur friends.

Charlie Dog has learned some Spanish on his numerous camping trips to our favorite Mexico beaches.  He has accompanied us to a wedding at Lake Tahoe.  He went for a chilling swim in Glacier National Park, and nearly every river along the way from San Diego to Montana and back.  And who says Dalmatians don’t like water.  It was very fun to watch him get his first taste of a fresh water swim.  Having grown up with salty ocean water, waves, tides, and seaweed, fresh water was a real treat.  Charlie Dog is also a bit of a ‘desert rat’, though this is seasonal, early spring and late fall.  It is far too chilly in the winter (Dog jacket a must, and occasionally Doggles for the wind), and way too hot in the summer for dog and human alike.  Other favorites in Charlie’s travel journal, music festivals, he has to break out his tie-dye collar for these events, and can be found on the dance floor most of the night.

On any and all of the travels with Charlie Dog, his Honest Kitchen diet is always in tow.  It is easy to whip up, does not take up much space, no cooking, no cooler needed, just fresh water a bowl and a traveling hungry hound.  Here are some tricks of the trade.  Thermos is key!  If you are on the road, fill up your thermos at the gas station’s Hot tea water dispenser (we have never been charged, but it is polite to ask), or if you are camping, when you make your morning tea of coffee, heat a little extra water up, store in the thermos, and when is feeding time, scoop his/ her HK meal, pour quantum sufficient water, stir, cool, serve.  There is no better feeling then to offer your tired traveling buddy a nice warm meal at the start of the day, and after a long day.

Ah, the life of Charlie Dog-  Lucky boy.

So, here are some of the things we needed to make these trips successful.  First call ahead and make sure your fur friend will welcome, and find out what the rules are.  Here is a list from our camping kit of must haves: Sun block for Charlie’s pink bridge of his nose, towel to soak off the water (if there is water, he will swim in it, even puddles, the muddier the better), dog bed for evening campfires comfort and chill out place after a day of hiking, doggie sleeping bag (he likes to be covered up, and covered up completely), quilted jacket for cool weather nights, hiking water bowl (Water Rover is our favorite, because you can tip the unused water portion back in for the next water break), small pliers for cactus sticker (ouch!!), of course a first aid kit, fresh water, dog bowl for a nice warm Honest Kitchen breakfast and dinner.  Appropriate licensing, up to date tags, extra collar and leash, long tie down if required in some camp areas, location and phone number of area emergency vet clinics.  This is all for the camping dog, but the list goes on and on, if you are a camper you know, there is always something new to and ingenious to bring every trip.
