Lately I’ve been receiving a ton of calls from people asking if we carry a diet for their pet that’s in kidney failure. The most common request is for a food that is low in protein, as recommended by their Veterinarian. However, most modern research has found that very restrictive protein is not always the best course of action for kidney problems; the quality of protein is more important than the quantity. Many of the ‘prescription’ diets are made with ingredients of a terrible quality including byproducts preserved with chemicals that only further strain the already weakened kidney. Feeding a fresh diet that includes a wholesome meat source with a slightly higher protein content is the most beneficial thing you could do for your pup or cat in kidney failure.
