I discovered The Honest Kitchen just after the foods went on the market. Dax, one of my Australian Shepherds, had seizured and in the veterinary investigations as to why she had had a seizure, my veterinarian discovered she had liver disease, specifically copper toxicosis. This meant her body was not metabolizing copper correctly and it was building up in her liver, causing liver failure and hence, a seizure.
This is not common in her breed and we had no idea what had caused it. Some breeds, like Bedlington Terriers, do see it more commonly and it appears to have a genetic predisposition. Unfortunately, there is little to be done for it except support the liver. There is no cure and no medication to stop the progression of the disease.
So I began researching the problem. I began Dax on several herbal supplements that are known to support the liver, including milk thistle, red clover and licorice root. On her vet’s suggestion, I also began supplementing her diet with strong doses of anitoxidants. With these supplements, she was doing okay but really was just holding her own. Her veterinarian gave her six months to live. Middle aged, she had already surpassed the age that most dogs with this disease reach.
I wasn’t satisfied with that, however, and began formulating a home made diet for Dax. After several weeks on a home made diet, she was doing better but I was having a hard time with my schedule creating and continuing this diet. After all, if I fed Dax a home made diet, I had to do the same thing for the other dogs!
So I began researching commercial dog foods. Most of them made me sick. Corn, corn and more corn. By products, meat and bone meals, and so much wheat! I didn’t want to feed my healthy dogs those foods - never mind Dax. Then I discovered The Honest Kitchen, which had just come on the market. I got ten pounds and began adding it to the home made diet and then gradually switched all three dogs over totally. I was amazed at how much the dogs loved this food! After all, it looked like a green paste! Icck! But they inhaled it like I inhale chocolate!
Today, Dax is twelve and a half. She still has her liver disease; nothing will cure it. She also is a little stiff, especially on cold winter mornings, but she’s still active, plays ball every day, and is still very much the boss over the two younger male dogs. Her eyes are bright, her coat is good, and she’s amazing her veterinarian. Her appetite is great and she still inhales her Embark every day.
My two other dogs are thriving as well. Riker was changed over to The Honest Kitchen foods when Dax was and he no longer has the skin allergies he used to have. At seven and a half, you’d never know it. He’s at a good weight, active and always ready to work and play. Bashir, my youngest, has never eaten anything else since I brought him home at nine weeks of age. He’s a handsome, healthy, bright eyed two year old.
I cannot, obviously, say that these foods will cure all ills. But I will say my veterinarian called me a few weeks ago. He said, “Hey, Liz, I have a client who’s dog was just diagnosed with copper toxicosis. What’s that food you’re feeding Dax?”
