Daily Paws: 50 States United Against Dog Fighting

I have good news to report! :-) Wyoming, the last remaining hold out, has just joined the rest of the country in outlawing dog fighting and classifying the horrible act as a felony! Dog fighting is now a felony in all 50 states. Wyoming’s Gov. Dave Freudenthal signed the legislation Tuesday, upgrading the crime from a misdemeanor.

With the case of jailed former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick shedding light on the practice, Humane Society president Wayne Pacelle is calling it a new era for dogs and a moment for Americans to savor.

“This is a real reason to celebrate — a landmark moment in the struggle to rid our nation of this hideously cruel activity that destroys so many innocent animals and is so corrosive to the ideals of a decent and civil society,” Pacelle said.Dog fighting involves more than 250,00 dogs each year and is a criminal enterprising involving as many as 140,000 human participants, HSUS says.

It is a bit troubling it took all 50 states this long, but better late than never! The Humane Society of the United States is now pushing the Pentagon to classify animal cruelty as a felony under the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice) that governs the millions of US service members. As the Humane Society put it, this is ” a new era for man’s best friend.”
