Shawney is a 12 year old Retriever mix that is up for adoption at FOCAS, one of our local San Diego Animal Shelters. How cute is that smile and can you believe that she is 12, she doesn’t look a day over one.

She has a sad story like most pets that end up in shelters. Her owner passed away and she didn’t have anywhere to go. She found a temporary home at FOCAS and hopes to find a new loving home where she can spend her golden years. She is deaf but I can tell you from experience all you need is a little extra time and patience. Ideally her perfect companion would be retired or someone who works from home. She is house trained, likes walks and also enjoys the company of other animals.

No, the Honest Kitchen isn’t going into the cake business but co-workers Jenna, Raquel, James and I are spending our Monday nights taking a cake decorating class. Yes, we have decided that after spending 40+ hours a week together just wasn’t enough. Just kidding, they know I love them! It was something fun for us to do together and has been a blast so far. We were all a little scared the first night but I think last nights class gave us some more confidence…or at least some of us.

The first cake we did was a beautiful display of some lattice work, a pretty basket of flowers and a seashell border. It was a mess. Frosting, tips and powdered sugar everywhere. All of our frosting we made wasn’t hard enough to decorate with so we had to keep adding spoons full of sugar to our frosting. Oh yeah we managed to add spoons full of sugar to our clothes too. I looked like a powdered donut by the end of the night thanks to James.

The funniest part about this is that at the end of our 6 week class we are going to have the first ever HK cake competition. The food network has nothing on us cause we are going to bring it and the lucky judges will be our fellow co-workers…just the two-legged this time.

Check back in July when we announce the winner of the inner office CAKE-OFF!!! I wonder if there will be prizes.

Last time I packed up my bags and went out of town I was guilt struck by my dog Chance. He looked at me with those big brown eyes and I knew it was going to be hard for me to leave him. If I had the opportunity to take him with me then why not. But traveling with your dog isn’t always that simple, not because of you but the hotels, transportation and the limited activities that are out there.

I started to think about it more after I read the 2008 Dog-Friendly Travel Report Card. If I had better services provided to me then heck yeah I would take Chance with me. I can see it now, shopping on 5th Avenue, lying on the beach in Hawaii sipping on Mai Tai’s or hiking through Yellow Stone. The possibilities could be endless. Like the report stated if I could purchase an airline ticket for him I would. I couldn’t stand thinking about him in a crate below me, while I’m watching a movie and eating yummy airline food. I was actually kind of shocked by the report. So many people have pets that they would want to travel with and they aren’t all small dogs. Chance is a big boy and wouldn’t fit under my seat. But I’m sure he would be happy to sit next to me.

You would think that more and more businesses would be going crazy to offer services for owners and their pets. I’m not saying that there aren’t places, just a limit to them. Shoot just in San Diego there are about 700,000 dogs. That’s almost a dog per household.
