Last week on an inspirational whim I decided to invest on some teeth cleaning tools for my dog, Kylie. Little did I know this seemingly easy task would erupt into an all out war which would end in me lying breathless across the living room floor. Here I thought I was doing a good thing for my baby, promoting good dental hygiene… she, on the other hand, acted as though I was committing bloody murder. I purchased one of those kits with a toothbrush, tooth paste, and a slip cover mini brush that goes over your finger for those “hard to reach places” in your dogs mouth. The instructions were seriously twice the length of this blog title; some thing to the effect of:
1. Remove Products from package
2. Let dog taste small sampling of toothpaste then squeeze onto brush
3. Gently brush dogs teeth and gum line (for hard to reach places use finger cover)
Simple, yes? NO!
I got the first two steps down thinking I was pro. But step 3 didn’t come so easy. The minute I so much as attempted to insert the brush into Kylie’s mouth she made noises that reminded me of the time I tried to clip her nails, (another glamorous event that lead me to forking out the $11 bucks to the vet to do it for me….) noises much like a cat in heat or a really high pitched whining sound. After a few attempts Kylie made an escape for the other side of the room huddled in her bed.

Fiesta Island is San Diego’s largest leash-free gathering spot and now there are ruffs all around San Diego that the city is planning to develop it. Is this a concern for your pup, absolutely? The city is currently working on a plan to “develop” the current leash-free area located on the south side of the island. The goal is to divide it up into three sections and put fencing, roads and parking lots up. This would mean that the large area that was once free grounds for dogs to run leash-free, hike and play with their two-legged and four legged friends could be in jeopardy.
If the city cannot offer a large recreation spot for our furry friends to run free then where are they suppose to go. Currently there are 700,000 dogs calling San Diego home and they need options. We are taxpayers and dog lovers and should have the opportunity to have a recreation area such as Fiesta Island. A place to hang out at and not worry about our dogs not having adequate space to play. The city should use the money on other things and leave Fiesta Island alone…

Charlie, our VP and big motocross superstar (sarcasm), was strolling the internet a few nights ago and came across some Honest Kitchen fans in the most unlikely place. ADVrider.com, a forum for “Adventure Moto Biker’s” has a thread dedicated entirely to do food. Who would’ve thought right?! (ADVRiders THK thread) He got to talking to a few of the forum members and ended up sending out a few samples. One of the “hardcore” bikers took our “human grade” label quite literally and stole a bite to eat from his dog!! Though it’s entirely safe for human consumption, it’s still a bit weird to have embark for dinner yea?
The face of a madman folks, at least he knows whats good for him though!
I’ve tasted the food but never made a meal out of it (ok, maybe once)!! Have you ever tasted our food? Look, even our President sneaks a bite in here and there…as her starving dog looks on..

but does she care?! How’s that Force taste Lucy?!

Ear infections can be common in certain breeds of dogs and though often easily treated, if ignored, an ear infection can lead to serious damage. Dr. Pitcairn’s’ Complete Guide to Natural Health offers a natural home remedy-
If the discharge is watery, smelly, and thin, flush and massage the ear canal once or twice a day with a solution of 1 cup of pure water (distilled or filtered), 1 teaspoon of a tincture or glycerin extract or Marigold flower buds (calendula) and 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt.
For ears that are very painful or sensitive but have little discharge, treat in the same way as above but use fresh juice. Use a liquid preparation of gel made from the leaves of the Aloe Vera plant.
to soften and dissolve dark, waxy, oily ear discharge, flush and massage the ear canal with sweet almond oil, which is also soothing and healing to the skin. If the ear is painful as well, alternate with aloe treatment.

A few online wannabe gossip sites are reporting that Paris Hilton is getting her very own Pet Show in the UK. If this birdie is to be believed, Britain’s Living TV Network will shadow the um, star, Paris as she manages a pet grooming salon. When asked to comment on this, the Living TV Network balked at the idea, simply stating “This one’s not us!”.
E News Online reminds us why Paris is known as a Saint to the animals:
- She was recently berated by a cat adoption agency, first for failing to neuter a new kitten, and then for deserting the animal at a vet’s office. The adoption agency, the Kris Kelly Foundation, then re-rescued the kitten and issued a scathing statement to People magazine, calling Paris “a negligent pet owner.”
- Paris once bragged to Ellen DeGeneres about having 17 dogs. Except that in Los Angeles, it’s illegal for nonbreeders to have more than three. Paris also told Ellen that the dogs “keep having babies, and I feel bad about giving them away.” Finally, she backtracked and said all her animals were neutered, except for “two of them.”
- The DeGeneres revelation spurred L.A. Department of Animal Services to cite Paris for having all those dogs without a breeder’s license.
- She hasn’t been too successful in the exotic-pet realm, either. Remember that raccoon like animal, the kinkajou, that Hilton had a couple of years ago? She reportedly brought the wild animal into California, which is illegal. Oh, and it bit her. It’s unclear whether authorities forced her to give it up.
- Even Paris’ neighbors have told the press that she doesn’t do right by her pups. “She treats her animals horribly,” Shelby Segall told Page Six last year. “She had a little orange kitty about a year ago that kept getting out, and we kept telling her it was outside. She didn’t seem like she cared, and then one day the cat got run over in the middle of the street and die
How I long to be one of Paris’ 17 chihuahuas!! Thats Hott! (I’m only kidding). Imagine for one second dropping your pup off at this grooming salon.

This is the first in our series of ‘Celebrity Bloggers’ and comes from our dear friend and supporter, Tracie Hotchner, esteemed author of “The Dog Bible: Evey thing your dog wants you to know’.
Each month The Honest Kitchen donates a portion of it’s profits to a different non-profit organization. One donation in particular, to the HSUS, drew a spirited response from some of our customers, against the donation. Tracie Hotchner was “sickened by this reaction-to say the least” and felt an attack on our donation to The HSUS was an attack on the one & only organization “working tirelessly to promote a dignified life (and death) for animals”. Tracie says “I’m glad the blog is here so I can say “Shame on you” to those self-righteous and angry nay-sayers - you are attacking people on our side, the side of animals”.
Listen to Lucy (THK President) discuss the customer uproar with Tracie Hotchner
I am the author of the best-seller “THE DOG BIBLE; Everything Your Dog Wants You to Know” (and also THE CAT BIBLE: Everything Your Cat Expects You to Know). I am also the producer/writer and host of two live weekly call-in radio shows - DOG TALK on NPR station WLIU out of Southampton College, New York and CAT CHAT, on the Martha Stewart Channel for Sirius Satellite radio.
I have been an active promoter of the Honest Kitchen food for years. By my own choice, for free, I have been working to get Honest Kitchen samples into peoples’ hands because my research made clear the quality and integrity of this product, well before the era of pet food recall. Therefore I was privy to the fact that when HK recently gave a generous donation to HSUS they were viciously attacked by some of their customers for this charitable decision. I was sickened by this reaction, to say the least - because any attack on HSUS is an attack on the one and only organization working tirelessly to promote a dignified life (and death) for animals by improving laws that affect the way we share the planet with animals. I’m glad this blog is here so I can say “Shame on you” to those self-righteous and angry nay-Sayers - you are attacking people on our side, the side of animals. I want to believe that you have been stirred up into anger by misinformation, and disinformation, I’d love to hear a rational, fact-based rationale for this venomous attack (more…)
