Not for you - for the dogs!
This recipe was sent to us by a customer, Amanda Johnson, from Colorado. The tried this out on her pups, Dexter and Hanako, Zephy and QP. Give it a try -we bet you’ll receive some slobbery kisses in return!
Ingredients:
1/2 cup canned pumpkin
1/2 cup almond butter
1/2 cup HK dry diet
Optional:
1/4 cup unsalted almonds – finely chopped
Carob powder
In a small bowl, mix pumpkin and almond butter together using a fork. Mix in HK. Place in refrigerator for about an hour until, firm. With your hands, roll rounded teaspoonfuls of mixture into balls. Optional: Roll balls in almonds or Carob powder, coating them evenly. Place on cookie sheet in freezer. When completely frozen, pack into airtight containers and store in freezer.
Amanda comments: “The plus is that the treat is grain free, egg free, and peanut free (with the use of the almond butter) so all my kids can eat them!”

At The Honest Kitchen each month, we select a different charity, to whom we donate a portion of that particular month’s profits. Sounds simple. Usually, works very well. Customers love to know that a percentage of the money they spend with us that month will be directed to a non-profit somewhere, and do some good.
Once in a while though, the charity we select ruffles some feathers. Occasionally, fur flies. That happened this month, when we announced that our donation would be sent to The Humane Society Of The United States. We’ve come to understand that charitable giving isn’t quite as simple as we’d thought. We can’t please all the people, all the time. Sometimes, people are downright disappointed with the charity we pick.
As it is, we choose the cause, send the money and then it’s over. We don’t make secrets about the charities we donate to. We do not harbor or foster ongoing associations with specific causes. Rather, we select a new charity to donate to -mention it in that month’s newsletter, and the following month - well, we donate to someone else. We believe this is the best way for customers to decide whether or not they would like to purchase our products, and thus indirectly donate to a chosen charity, in any given month. It is our hope that even if a charity is not in line with a customer’s own values one month, hopefully it will be, in a subsequent month.
It does surprise us sometimes that giving away our profit could disappoint people more than if we kept it all ourselves. Still, everyone’s entitled to an opinion and we truly welcome what you have to say.
If you would like to suggest a charity, to be considered for a donation through Pawlanthropy, our charitable giving program, please let us know by sending an email to Lucy@thehonestkitchen.com We love our customers’ to speak their minds and provide feedback. It all goes toward shaping the way we do business as we continue to grow.
