Our friend CJ Puotinen wrote to us recently about the inaugral Hudson Valley Humane Society Therapy Dog Camp which will take place in New York state later this month. The first camp ever devoted to Animal Assisted Therapy – will be a weekend packed with workshops, presentations, training sessions, and special events for therapy dogs (and therapy dogs in training) and their handlers. Our goal is to improve the dog/handler bond and make every aspect of pet-assisted therapy safer, more effective, and more rewarding for all.
This small, hands-on, comprehensive camp will include activities such as Bridge & Target Training for Therapy Dogs, Grooming Tips for Therapy Dogs and Aromatherapy for Therapy Dogs and Handlers by CJ Puotinen, who’s the author of several fabulous books including The Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care and Natural Remedies for Dogs and Cats.
Throughout the weekend, the camp’s goal is to help therapy dogs and their handlers learn new techniques, practice new methods, and in every way enhance their work as a therapy dog team.
The camp is limited to 20 dog/handler teams, a very small size that allows for individual attention. Dogs must be at least 1 year old, and the dog/handler team must be registered with a national or regional pet therapy organization or come with a letter of recommendation from a professional trainer.
Each camper may bring one (1) dog. One dog and one camper per room. All breeds, including mixed breeds, are welcome. Dogs must be calm, friendly, quiet, healthy (with proof of current rabies vaccination and a negative fecal exam within 60 days of the camp), and crate-trained.
