The long weekend is almost here and no doubt BBQs, parties, and sleep filled days have been planned. Here are a few tips to keep your pets happy and healthy with all this new-found-together-time. First, you’re on vacation, but your dog still wants to go for a walk. Give her at least some moderate exercise and you’ll notice that she won’t be on edge all day. Second, make sure that your guests know that it’s not okay to share all their food with your pets. What’s a no-no ingredient?

• onions and garlic (in large amounts)
• macadamia nuts
• unbaked yeast dough

We came across this gem of a video while putting some of our own videos on YouTube. It turns out that it’s a response to the Humane Society’s “Knock Out Animal Fighting” Video Contest. Ms. Paisley Sky, the star of the video, is an incredibly effective communicator that is able to really convey the whole idea of the role that trust plays in the relationships that we have with our animals.Although, there are many animals out there that’s trust, health, happiness, and life are being exploited for financial gain by those who are supposed to be taking care of them, there are a lot of reputable rescue groups that strive to both help dogs and rehabilitate a specific breed’s reputation. After a nice weekend in the #1 dog-friendly city in the country (yes, we wore flowers in our hair and left our hearts there, too), we returned to work today just in time to meet our newest visiting friend: Peanut, a 2 year old Jack Russell Terrier. In the coming weeks we’ll have more information up about our resident pups, but if you didn’t know, we currently have 2 in-house terriers (with two more Bostons to follow suit soon). All the people out there owned by Terriers or have ever met a Terrier know that they are a very energetic bunch, but surprisingly enough they haven’t taken over the office.
Where was I? Ah yes, Peanut is an adorable little lady that turned 2 years old today, so we’re having a little Ice Pup fest for her. Birthday parties of all kinds seem to be a pretty regular occurrence here at the HK headquarters. For Texas’ birthday, Jenna made a cake that looked like it came from a fancy bakery. I think that recipe will be published in a forthcoming edition of the newsletter, so if you have any upcoming dawgie birthdays, it’s pretty much a must-have!

We had a great time at the 2nd Annual Loews Coronado Surf Dog Competition in Imperial Beach, CA. We passed out samples of the food, took pictures, and gave out Ice Pups to anyone and everyone! They were a huge hit with all the dogs that desperately needed to cool off from the hot, summer sun. We want to give a special shout out to Elvis and Little Dude (Basset Hounds) who own Barbara Harris of Ocean Beach. Little Dude, a dog currently on Honest Kitchen, won the 1st heat of the competition. Congrats to the whole Harris Family! Also, We wanted to give a shout out to Natasha, a beautiful black dog (pictured with pink collar), also on the Honest Kitchen that stopped by to say hello.

It’s been SO incredibly hot here, as you know, so I whipped up another batch of Ice Pups the other day and gave them to Jack & Honda. I took a picture of them enjoying the fresh-out-of-the-freezer ice cube tray!

I am owned by 3 shih tzu with different allergies and medical issues. This is the first time in years that I have them all on the same food. Even though I have to vary the proteins, they are all eating the Preference. They love it. They lie beside their bowls waiting for it to process. They finish their bowls completely, which my picky 6 year old has never done. Their fur is so soft and growing quickly. My Senior has had no problems with itching or ears. My 6 year old has had no hot spots. I am anxious to see what the results are from my 6 year old’s urine test in another couple of weeks. I just wanted to let you know that after months of my 3 Miniature Schnauzers being on Force, they are healthier then ever. The two black MS’s I have had their hair turning red and dry. Their breath smelled bad. The salt and pepper MS had dry skin and always itching. Their hair is now black again, their skin is healthier and their breath is back to normal now. They lost a pound or two and I see their waistline now. They look and act healthy now. Also, your customer support has always been there for any questions I have asked. I just received my first order from the Honest Kitchen and I wanted to say that I am very impressed. My pug is such a finicky eater and we have had a very hard time finding a dog food he would eat. I had resorted to making him homemade food, which he liked, but it was time consuming and expensive and I was afraid he wasn’t getting all the nutritional requirements he needs. Thank you for producing such a well-considered line of foods for dogs and cats. Both of my dogs developed food sensitivities after suffering GI infections. Your foods, Preference specifically, have been the only things they’ve eaten that hasn’t caused any problems at all. They also love the stuff, practically demanding that their food be the very first thing prepared at mealtimes! With the absence of any grains, flax or seeds like sesame, Preference is well-digested by my pups. The daily presence of a variety of fresh, raw meat is a constant source of enthusiasm and enjoyment.
