Shoo Flea Don’t Bother Us!

We don’t know about your neck of the woods, but flea season is upon us. Here are some helpful hints that come from an old newsletter. There’s a ton of valuable information in these newsletters, so if you haven’t already signed up you can do so here. If you subscribe, but would like to check out older editions, click here.

Beating Summer Fleas Au Natural

Controlling of all life stages in the flea life cycle in both the environment and on all animals in the vicinity, is crucial.
Diatomaceous Earth is our favorite product for killing fleas that live in yards and homes. This product does not contain chemicals and can be used freely on furnishings and carpets as well as outdoor areas. Vacuuming of excess product (as well as fleas, eggs and larvae) is a vital step in controlling fleas, too.
Pennyroyal herb is another renowned flea repellent although it should not be used around pregnant animals or people.
Pennyroyal, which is a member of the mint family, can be planted around yards and particularly near doorways to homes, to help keep fleas at bay. In addition, Pennyroyal Essential Oil can be diluted in water and sprayed liberally in indoor and outdoor areas.
Nematodes are a highly effective option for lawns and other outside areas. These microscopic organisms feed on flea eggs and larvae and help to control flea populations, naturally. Ask your local gardening shop for details on ordering nematodes.
An electronic flea trap may be another worthy investment, to combat fleas inside without chemicals.

For topical application directly on the pet to repel fleas and soothe irritated skin that can result from flea-bite dermatitis, try one of the following.
To keep fleas away:
Lemon Water – Dr Pitcairn recommends steeping lemons in water over night and spraying the solution on pets the following morning.
Tea Tree or Citronella oil on inside of collar works as a natural flea collar to repel fleas.
Lavender, lemon balm, rosemary and other woodsy essential oils are also thought to be helpful- add 2-3 drops of essential oil to ½ litter of water, spray pet and surroundings.
(Remember, dogs have very sensitive sniffers so be sure to dilute essential oils well and do not apply near face).
Neem Oil (be aware that some pets can be very allergic to Neem) can be found in many commercial products including shampoos and sprays.

Try one of the follow for irritated flea bit dermatitis:
Evening Primrose Oil is helpful for direct application to skin that has been irritated by fleas.
Tea rinse- To help sooth irritated skin (external rinse), steep a couple bags of black tea in 1 gallon water. Allow tea to cool and soak pet.
For an herb tea rinse- steep a couple bags of Chamomile in 1 gallon water, add comfrey leaf and or aloe leaf for additional soothing relief. Allow tea to cool and soak pet. Refrigerate unused portion.

Fighting fleas from the inside out:
Building a strong immune system is crucial for helping pets to fend off fleas as well as overcome the effects of allergic reactions to flea saliva (flea bite dermatitis). First off, a natural diet is key. Supplementation with a cleansing herbal supplement such as Sparkle is also beneficial. Homeopathic Urtica Urens (nettle), Sulphur, Rhus Tox (Poison Ivy) and Pulex Irritans (Human Flea) are all used for various flea bite reactions. We don’t recommend spot-on treatments for fleas but if these become absolutely necessary, supplementation with Invigor can help the system overcome the effects of the chemicals these products contain.
Along with a fresh, natural diet, dietary supplementations with Vitamin C as well as an Essential Fatty Acid are also thought to be beneficial for immunity and reducing any inflammatory response.

Meet Hope the Agility Goddess

honest kitchen agility

My Samoyed girl, Hope and I just returned from 4 days at agility camp in Illinois. Since we were going to be away from home for 4 days, I fretted about what to pack so Hope and I would be warm/cool, dry, safe and happy. By the time we pulled out of the driveway to begin our journey, our van looked like it was ready to burst at the seams! But the one thing I never worried about was providing Hope with the very best fuel for her body, because she eats Honest Kitchen Embark. It was easy to pre-measure her meal portions into zip-top sandwich bags and pack them into my suitcase. Each morning I mixed Hope’s breakfast before leaving for a morning walk - by the time we returned to the hotel, her Honest Kitchen was ready to eat. It was reassuring to know that my little athlete was getting the best food possible to provide fuel for her activities. Each morning Hope was excited to begin the day’s activities and each evening when we arrived back at the hotel, she was dog tired and ready for a nap. We had a wonderful time, she was a super travel companion and hotel guest, and I can’t wait for the next road trip with Hope. Thanks, Honest Kitchen, for providing such a great food that is also a super traveling companion!

Because Ben &

I’m not an animal communicator by any means, but I swear that sometimes I can read my dog’s mind. Last weekend I was out enjoying the San Diego sun and an amazing cup of gelato when I realized that my dog was giving me “the look.” You know exactly what I’m talking about, too. With that one look, he was able to communicate to me his displeasure with me for eating such a yummy, frosty treat in front of him. Wait, wait… don’t feel too bad for him. I should have mentioned that he was gnawing on a marrow bone and teetering on the point of being completely marrow drunk. I didn’t give in and share the gelato, but I did walk to my freezer and pull out a frozen Ice Pup for my buddy. He’s crazy for them, but I like to make little additions to give him some variety. Here is what we’ve come up with so far:

Yogurt Pups: Throw in a little yogurt at the bottom of each ice cube slot and pour the Ice Pups mixture over it. You’ll end up with a frozen mini-parfait that gives a little dose of a probiotic, too.

Blueberry Surprise: Throw in some blueberries… they’re full of antioxidants and taste yummy.

Detox Pups: Make a tea out of sparkle and hydrate the Ice Pups mixture with it

Chill Pups: Brew up some Chamomile tea and use that to hydrate the mixture

Play around with stuff you have in your house (remember: no raisins, grapes, chocolate, etc.). Let us know if you come up with something cool!
