The 3rd Annual Dog Products of the Year Award Winners were officially announced this week, and we’re just a teeny bit excited to have won our category for the second year in a row!
Each year, PupLife.com honors the best dog products on the market. The 2006 Dog Products of the Year Awards serve as a buying guide for dog parents looking for the highest quality goods for their pets.
For the third year in a row, PupLife.com, a leading online retailer of intelligent dog supplies, selected its 2006 Dog Products of the Year winners based on a number of factors including overall product design, product testing, customer feedback and overall sales.
PupLife.com President Eric Houtkooper, said, “We are extremely selective about the products we carry. We rigorously test all of our products, gather customer feedback and gauge sales throughout the year. Only then do we choose the best in each category for our list of Dog Products of the Year.” The 3rd Annual Dog Products of the Year categories include Dog Toys, Dog Treats, Dog Food, Dog Training Aid, Dog Carriers, Dog Safety, Dog Health & First Aid, Dog Books & DVDs, and (new for 2006) Best Gift Idea and Best Overall Dog Product of the Year.
PupLife.com honored The Honest Kitchen as Best Dog Food for the second year in a row. I discovered The Honest Kitchen just after the foods went on the market. Dax, one of my Australian Shepherds, had seizured and in the veterinary investigations as to why she had had a seizure, my veterinarian discovered she had liver disease, specifically copper toxicosis. This meant her body was not metabolizing copper correctly and it was building up in her liver, causing liver failure and hence, a seizure.
This is not common in her breed and we had no idea what had caused it. Some breeds, like Bedlington Terriers, do see it more commonly and it appears to have a genetic predisposition. Unfortunately, there is little to be done for it except support the liver. There is no cure and no medication to stop the progression of the disease.
So I began researching the problem. I began Dax on several herbal supplements that are known to support the liver, including milk thistle, red clover and licorice root. On her vet’s suggestion, I also began supplementing her diet with strong doses of anitoxidants. With these supplements, she was doing okay but really was just holding her own. Her veterinarian gave her six months to live. Middle aged, she had already surpassed the age that most dogs with this disease reach.
I wasn’t satisfied with that, however, and began formulating a home made diet for Dax. After several weeks on a home made diet, she was doing better but I was having a hard time with my schedule creating and continuing this diet. After all, if I fed Dax a home made diet, I had to do the same thing for the other dogs! (more…)

Dental health is a concern for many people as the mouth is often a good indicator of general health. A lot of people fear that leaving their kibble behind is akin to saying “buh-bye” to good dental health. It’s just not true, though. The incidence of tartar buildup with our foods is actually very minimal because of their loose, soupy consistency. The whole dental kibble-cleanse is something of a myth which should lead one to ponder whether eating crunchy cookies will clean your own teeth, but I can see where there’d be a wrong turn in the path to “no.” (We all at one time or another believed it to be true, too.)
The truth is that the nature of the crunchy kibble means when it’s chewed, the sugars and complex carbohydrates actually get impacted into the gum line, which is detrimental for the long term health of the teeth and mouth. Still, we believe that dental health is important, so we encourage you to feed raw beef marrow (soup) bones for recreation (aka. not for eating, but for gnawing on). Dogs will find them pretty darn entertaining and yummy. You will be pleased with the results and the fact that feeding these bones on a regular basis can virtually eliminate the need for dental cleanings in many dogs. IMPORTANT: We do not recommend cooked bones of any kind as these can splinter with serious health consequences. Also, exercise the same care and caution with these raw bones as you would any other raw meat.
If your dog already has some dental problems, here are some holistic nutritional supplements that can contribute to dental health.
- Vitamins A, C, and E (antioxidant)
- Coenzyme Q10 (antioxidant - reduces gingival inflammation)
- Bioflavanoids - like Rutin and Hesperidin (available in some toothpastes)
For information on dosage (and if they are appropriate for your particular pup), please contact your homeopathic veterinarian.

You think art galleries are cool, admit it. Well, so does Coleman (pictured: dog), Jojo (pictured: cat), and Spidey (not pictured) the furry residents of one in New York City. Their owner, Hanna, found Coleman while walking around in Williamsburg, Brooklyn about eight years ago. A proactive dog, Coleman was trying to find his own home by looking into everyone’s doorway’s for an in. When they met it was instant love: barking and leg humping included; and that’s when she knew. Coleman gave up his leg humping ways for face licking instead, being timed at 20 minutes and going strong! Since he started eating Force, his coat looks great and no one believes he’s almost nine years old.
Jojo had a long journey before she got to Hanna. First she hung out with a homeless guy and then at a kind of halfway house for cats where she was routinely roughed up. Good thing she found Hanna because now she’s the “queen of the castle.” Like a lot of kitties out there, she enjoys looking at birds and squirrels from a safe distance inside the house. In the colder months, you can often find her lounging in a box that’s just a little too small for her for warmth or emotional comfort… who knows? (Perhaps there’s a stash of cat nip in there?) Jojo is also proud to be a little environmentalist kitty and can’t wait for Prowl to come in a refill bag. Good news, Jojo! They’ll be arriving soon!

Slentrol. Have you heard of it? Hopefully it’ll never catch on, but in our hurried lives where we’re searching for a quick fix, it is quite possible that it will in some circles. Slentrol works by inhibiting fat absorbtion in your pup’s body and supressing the appetite so that your hungry dog won’t be so hungry anymore. I don’t know about you, but I’d be really upset if someone KO’d my appetite without my permission and then I had to live with the side effects of vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. Thumbs down to that!
However, there’s a great alternative out there that will improve your dog’s health, energy level, mood, and lengthen its lifespan. Many, many, many people and dogs have seen incredible results just by eating a fresh diet and increasing their daily amount of exercise. (more…)
