Our 2006 figures are in, and we are honored to have been able to donate a total of more than 14% of our net profit for the year, to charities and non-profits, including those involved with animal welfare, humanitarian and environmental causes.
Some of the organizations we’ve given to in 2006 include Heifer International, the Humane Society, SPCA, FIDO (Fiesta Island Dog Owners), The Rabies Challenge Fund and Defenders of Wildlife.
We look forward to continuing to give back in 2007, it feels good to be able to help.

I’m sure you hear this quite a bit…… We have a rescue named Gracie who’s part boxer/shepherd…well, that’s what we’ve been told, but who knows. Any way, she’s been having some skin irritations on her belly and hind legs…..red patches, welts, sores, etc. Her ears were also showing signs of involvement as well and a very prominent red bar was evident in her right ear. We tried some holistic remedies to try and ease her discomfort and also aid in healing the sores, which has helped but the condition, as a whole, has continued to be an issue. I decided to move most of her diet on to Verve, which she now adores to the point I have to watch her like a hawk around the product cause she’ll try and get into it in the dehydrated state. We also are using Embark as well.
Within 10 days, I was seeing improvement. She is now completely cleared up, both belly and ears. Her ears are a beautiful white color inside, which I have never seen in the three years we’ve owned her. She is, in general, a much happier dog…..

I love Force!
I am a golden retriever mix who was rescued a couple of years ago by a kind group of people who find new homes for goldens in trouble. The person I adopted thinks I’m pretty special so she was making all my meals herself. Real good stuff, too—raw meat, rice, oatmeal, pureed veggies, cottage cheese, and vitamins—and I thought I was pretty lucky. But my coat was always stiff and brittle and dull. Even thought the food was all high quality, I looked terrible and at the dog park I could hear the other dogs snickering behind my back. Then she heard about Force. We tried it one night and it was so delicious that all evening I kept going back to my dish to see if maybe I’d missed a smidge somewhere. Now I get Force every day mixed with rice or oatmeal or cottage cheese, and I am a changed dog. I could see a difference in my coat in 2 weeks. And now, after 6 weeks on your food my coat has a beautiful sheen and feels silky instead of like straw. It’s even started to sparkle. Now the dogs at the dog park don’t laugh at me anymore and there’s a cute little lab that’s making eyes at me. May the Force be with me!
Devotedly,
Skipper
P.S. The person I adopted says to also tell you that I don’t smell like a dog at all anymore, and that even my breath smells so good that she doesn’t mind getting my kisses.

The office is abuzz with all this blog talk. I have to get in on it, so I decided to share this tasty recipe that all of us pawed-ones enjoyed recently. The humans kind of pawed it a bit, too. Ask your parents to make it for you post-haste! (Yes, Rhodesian Ridgebacks say things like “post-haste.” After all, we’re very intelligent!)
Nourishing Winter Stew
3 pounds lamb-stew meat, cut into 1-inch chunks (or smaller depending on your pup’s size)
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
½ cup Preference
1 teaspoon paprika
3 to 6 tablespoons olive oil
4 carrots, peeled and cut into ½-inch-thick slices
1 cloves garlic, crushed
2 cups of low sodium chicken stock (or enough to cover at least half of the meat the dish)
3 cups sweet potato chopped into appropriately sized bites
2 cups kale
Preheat oven to 350° F. Pat the lamb dry with paper towels and place in a large bowl. In a shallow bowl, combine the flour and Preference. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the lamb and toss well. Heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil in a heavy casserole over medium heat. Brown the lamb in batches, adding more oil as needed. When all the lamb is browned, remove it and set aside. Add the carrots and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables begin to soften, about 10 minutes. Return the lamb to the casserole. Add the chicken stock. Bring to a simmer, add paprika and sweet potatoes, cover, and place on bottom rack of oven. Cook until the lamb is very tender, about 2 hours. Pull out of oven; add the kale, re-cover, and let sit until sufficiently cooled.

The Honest Kitchen, Inc. announced today that it has commenced sponsorship funding for F.I.D.O, the Fiesta Island Dog Owners group, which is campaigning to ensure that the voices of San Diego’s dog owners are heard, in the discussions for the $200m redevelopment of the city’s natural habitat.
“…there is no known source for this money or the additional expenses to maintain it! The city’s financial situation is currently a disaster. The Dept. of Park and Recreation has had to cut its staff, discontinue programs and close neighborhood swimming pools due to lack of money. It seems rather misguided to plan to spend millions of dollars on a park that the majority of users think should just be left alone!” States FIDO’s web site.
Fiesta Island is currently a haven for off leash use by the city’s well-behaved dogs. The open space there is ideal for canines to exercise and FIDO is concerned that the re-development will culminate in a drastic reduction of the space where off leash use is permitted.
Information on FIDO’s campaign which is fast gaining pace, can be found a http://www.fidosd.com
The Honest Kitchen, a pet food company with a difference, operates pet-friendly offices in Pacific Beach. “Our company pets, who work so hard every week, creating and tasting new recipes, love to run at Fiesta Island after a long busy day at the office” commented Lucy Postins, the company’s director of marketing. “We are pleased to be in a position to support this vitally important, community cause, which is truly dear to our hearts”.
During the coming weeks, a corporate team from The Honest Kitchen will be handing out product samples and helping to spread the word about the importance of ensuring that this beautiful habitat is developed with sensitivity and consideration for all who use it, including those who treasure it as a haven for off-leash use.

When I think of December, I think of the warmth of a fireplace, flannel sheets, fruitcakes (which I have thankfully never had the pleasure to taste), and my grandma’s once-a-year tamales. Our resident East Coaster, Laurette, seems to be able to most vividly recall the inclement weather and I’m sure Cami, our Colorado native, shares in her recollection. I’ve never lived anywhere that it’s snowed with any predictable frequency, so it’s not really something I’ve put a lot of thought into, but I know cold when I feel it. And dogs do, too! It’s kind of scary to think that there are still people that leave their dogs outside all day and night in terribly cold weather without providing any warm shelter. Thankfully, PETA is stepping in and helping to those dogs that’s owners can’t afford to get them houses (and won’t let them inside).
Check out their website for more information:

We bought two houses and can’t wait to see the photos of the dogs in their new homes.

Now, now, you need not fret, I’m still the savviest HK member with four paws. I’ve been taking a little time to renew and enjoy after all the work the HK crew team had me doing, you know tasting all those fresh, people food meals the had me trying in the formulation of Prowl. I’ve taken a little time off to hang out with my people, and my best buddy, Charlie the Dalmatian. Charlie does not like to share with too many of his Dog Buddies our relationship, so don’t… Let the cat out of the bag.
So after all this time off, lounging about, chase beetles, sun bath, and other normal cat like duties, I’ve started dreaming up a new Feline Diet. I think My Peeps at the HK will put my plan into action some time in the coming year. I’m guessing they are not going to allow me to add things like beetle juice, they are very strict and insist all ingredients be human edible. The beetle thing is kind of gross, and I really enjoy the chase more then the crunch.
So, if there are any like minded feline friends that would like to put your two cents in for suggestions on a feline diet, why not have your people write in and tell me what you’d like to see in the next feline formula.
